uwmarchives:

Thank You Vel Phillips

( February 18, 1924 – April 17, 2018)
We lost a true Milwaukee trailblazer, yesterday. A local and national hero. This woman had guts.
She got a bullet through her kitchen window and still marched for fair housing legislation. She got hate mail for wearing pants!
She was the first black woman to graduate from UW-Madison Law School, as well as the first woman and person of color elected to the Milwaukee Common Council. She was the Wisconsin Secretary of state, a proud and tireless advocate for the civil rights, she was a judge, and the close personal friend to three different presidents.
She was a mother of two and an auntie to many, many more.
Thank you Vel.  For everything.
If you want to know more about Vel’s legacy, check out UWM Archives Tumblr posts about her here. If you want to remember her through your actions, ask yourself what you can do to make this city more equal and compassionate, and then get moving!
